In 2026 Kolbrún founded Kolective Theatre to champion new writing by women, non-binary, queer and migrant playwrights in Edinburgh or with a connection to Edinburgh.
I confess that the Kolective is indeed ‘my circus’ filled with ‘my monkeys’, these are the things I am interested in seeing and staging, my taste, my passion, hence I have named it after me. Shamelessly!
Launching Spring 2026, Offspring Festival was the first of two annual festivals curated by writer and director Kolbrún Björt Sigfúsdóttir aka Kol - this first one took place at Summerhall 22nd and 23rd of May. Thanks to Summerhall Arts for supporting!
As a writer and director, I love new plays. Offspring Festival featured four new plays that I think deserve love and a platform. These were Rachel by Emery Schaffer, Troubles of the Female Variety by me, Kolbrún Björt Sigfúsdóttir, Webs by Julie Tsang and Rippling by Jennifer Adam. They all had full readings with professional actors, directed by me and Jo Rush. The goal with the festival is to make it easier for these pieces, and those to come, to find their audience and potential partners. The Kolective is about making connections.

I want to:
champion women, nb and queer writers in Scotland, particularly Edinburgh
Embrace and amplify ‘unnerving’ and ‘unusual’ stories at a time of film to musical ‘risk’ aversion
Create two curated themed festivals a year with a minimum of 4 pieces being read in full, at least one of which will be from a migrant playwright
Openly pursue finding producers and venues for the pieces, and if not these pieces then these writers
Actively seek community and connection
This is not a scratch, this is a showcase of new writing, not fractions but full stories that deserve to be seen
This is a start, not an end point
